Death is Coming In New Nioh 2 Story Trailer

A new Nioh 2 Story Trailer has released, and it’s all about the Spirit Stones.

From the press release:

Unleash your darkness!

Master the lethal art of the samurai in this brutal masocore action role-playing game… for death is coming.

Journey to 1555 feudal Japan, a country gripped in the misery and madness of endless warfare.
A place where monsters and evil spirits infest a land of natural beauty and menacing peril, where everyone from the smallest child to the bravest warrior lives in constant fear of the spiritual beings known as yokai.

Play as a mute rogue living as a hired mercenary and renowned yokai hunter. Born to and abandoned by human and yokai parents, you are burdened with the ability to take on supernatural yokai form.

Can you survive the treacherous Sengoku era and terrifying Dark Realm?

Where Nioh was was set in the year 1600, Nioh 2 is actually a prequel to the original game — set in the 1500s.

This time, instead of a playing a set character (as in Nioh), you can choose your own avatar to play as.  You’re able to choose between male or female, and there seems to be a lot of customization options.

Lots of good preset options. I can say first-hand from playing the Nioh 2 Alpha/Beta.

Unfortunately, the character is a mute.

This is a small blow for me, since I’d much prefer fully-voiced characters.  Voiced characters always helps getting invested and immersed into the story.

As for the story trailer impressions, it seems to be following the same core thread of the first game.  I’m hoping it will be more substantive and less nonsensical.

Let this be the end of wars waged with spirit stones.”  “To surrender oneself to a wish or desire, how frightful.

One of the main criticisms I had with Nioh was that it the plot felt disjointed and abstract.  The gameplay was a strong point, but you could tell they did not put the same effort into weaving in the story.

This mysterious woman in a yokai mask.

At a certain point, your mind begins to glaze over during the story scenes filled with these clichĂŠ phrases that don’t really add any substance.

It’s an area of the game that lacking in an otherwise complete package.  It’s still early, so I’ll make a final determination when the game releases.

Nioh 2 will be available exclusively for the Playstation 4 on March 13rd, 2020.

The original Nioh was also a PS4 exclusive, but eventually came out on PC 9 months later.  I assume Nioh 2 will be the same.
