Panache Digital Games – headed by Patrice DĂŠsilets — has been working on the new exploration survival game called Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey.  Interesting title… but what is it about?  Find out more in the Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey trailer.

Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey Trailer – What Is It?

I was interested in this game the moment I viewed the trailer.  For one, it’s not like your typical AAA budget game.  Your avatar is a primate, and you go do primate things.  Well it’s more than that.

It’s a bit of a simulator as you have to focus on some core elements of survival: eating, drinking, and sleeping.  The most interesting bit for me is the exploration.  There is no mini-map or directions of where to go.  Searching through the jungle of Neogene Africa to expand your territory is what is intriguing to me.  There are dangers and threats ever present in venturing into the unknown.

The tagline of the game is to “explore, expand, and evolve”.  It seems that as you play through the game, your choices can possibly effect how you evolve.  The game is set some 10 million years ago, and the game is supposed to span over 8 million years.  You are to gain new abilities and then pass them onto the next generation.

I’m glad to see more of these kind of unique games thriving in the modern era of gaming.  Similar to Ninja Theory (Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice), there should exist a segment of studios which are free to explore their ideas and flex their creativity — offering unique experiences, without the risk-averse nature and high expectations of a big budget AAA game.  Private Division has allowed Panache Digital Games such freedom.

Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey is coming sometime in 2019 to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.  Stay tuned for more content from Ancestors.
